Be Prepared

  • Have score cards written out before you arrive—it saves time and keeps things running smoothly.

  • Bring your whistle and something reliable to time with.

  • Aim to arrive 5–10 minutes before your first game.

  • Dress appropriately: Flyt top, sports bottoms, supportive trainers.

  • Keep jewellery to a minimum for safety.

Pre-Game Checks

  • Check all players (including subs and late arrivals) for jewellery and nails.

    • Nails: Short and smooth. If not, gloves are needed.

    • Jewellery: Must be removed where possible, or taped if it can’t be.

  • Make sure you’ve been paid before games begin.

  • Have a quick look at the court for any trip/slip hazards.

  • Check the Kit Bag to make sure everything you need is there.

    • If anything is missing, let the head office team know.

Timings

  • Keep games running to time—both the start and the finish matter.

  • Breaks between thirds (and between games) are 1 minute.

  • Game lengths:

    • 30 minutes: 3 × 8-minute thirds

    • 35 minutes: 3 × 10-minute thirds

    • 40 minutes: 3 × 12-minute thirds

  • Centre pass always starts with the team listed first on the fixture (on the left)

Rules

All umpires should follow the World Netball Rules (Sept 2024).

Solo Umpiring

We try to avoid solo nights, but if it happens:

  • Umpire fees are reduced by £2.

  • This gives teams a small discount while still recognising the extra effort you’re putting in.

Basic Expectations of Our Umpires

During Play

  • Stay slightly ahead of play so you’ve always got the best view of what’s happening.

  • Be vocal and clear—your calls, instructions, and centre pass signals help keep the game flowing.

  • Consistency is key. Nobody gets every call perfect, but being consistent helps teams feel the game is fair and enjoyable.

  • Safety comes first. Especially in beginner divisions, don’t hesitate to slow things down or stop play if it gets too fast, chaotic, or overcrowded. This would just mean blowing the whistle, asking player to find a space and slow down a little.

  • Offer guidance. Lots of our players are new to netball. If you can give simple tips (e.g., where they can go, who takes a penalty), it makes a big difference.

  • Injury Reporting – VERY IMPORTANT.

    • Any player who leaves the court due to injury must be reported.

    • During the night, jot down their name, DOB, and phone number on the score card.

    • Complete the online injury form once you’re home or the next morning—it only takes a couple of minutes and helps us track any recurring issues.

After the Game

  • Make sure you record Player of the Match so we can celebrate our players.

  • Update scores and POMs on Magic Sports within 24 hours.

  • Let us know about any incidents.

  • Report any issues so we can support you and the teams.
