Handling Conflict on Court
Sometimes, disagreements or tensions can happen on court. Here’s how we suggest our umpires approach these situations:
Stay Calm and Neutral
Keep your voice calm and friendly.
Avoid taking sides or showing frustration.
Focus on the rules and the situation, rather than personal opinions.
Address Issues Gently
If something minor happens, try to sort it out on the spot using your knowledge of the rules.
For safety concerns or bigger disagreements, feel free to pause the game until everyone is settled.
Giving Warnings and Suspensions
It’s important to know that giving warnings or suspending a player from the game is a tool for maintaining safety and fairness.
In social netball, this doesn’t happen often, but it’s good to know the process.
Warnings: Use clear, calm instructions to warn players about behaviour that may affect safety or fairness - This is typically a small suggestive hint to the player during the game with the intention for the player to adjust 'GK clean up the contact please' before it escalates to an official warning.
Suspension: Only use if behaviour continues or escalates and cannot be managed with a warning. This ensures the game stays safe and enjoyable for everyone and typically only to be used if a player becomes verbally or physically abusive.
Remember, we support our umpires fully to make these decisions confidently when needed.
Communicate Clearly
Speak politely to players and explain decisions in a simple, calm way.
Keep discussions short and professional.
Encourage respect and good sportsmanship between players, coaches, and yourself.
Reporting Conflicts
Any serious incidents or recurring issues should be reported.
Send a quick note with details (what happened, who was involved, and any action taken) to hey@flytnetball.com.
Include the time, match details, and any follow-up needed.
Handling conflicts gently and effectively helps keep the game safe, fair, and enjoyable for everyone.
