Netball is a game of precision, timing, and teamwork. Whether you’re looking to improve individually or help your team get sharper on court, there are plenty of ways to practice both at home and together. This guide covers fundamental skills and simple drills to help you improve your footwork, ball skills, defending, shooting, and passing.

Practicing at Home: Perfecting Your Netball Fundamentals

Even without a full court or teammates, you can still develop your skills. These exercises are perfect for beginners netball players, those returning through back to netball leagues or anyone playing in netball social leagues looking to sharpen their game.

Footwork

  • Pivot practice: Place a marker and pivot on one foot, keeping your landing foot grounded.

  • Quick steps: Use lines on your floor or driveway to practice side-to-side and forward/backward movements.

  • Agility exercises: Ladder drills or chalked lines improve speed, coordination, and reaction time – all essential for social league matches.

The above is a great way to work on your footwork at home without a netball court

Ball Skills

  • Handling drills: Toss the ball between hands, practice catching with soft hands, and keep the ball close to your body.

  • Wall passes: Bounce the ball against a wall with one or both hands to improve control and reaction speed.

Shooting

  • Target practice: Use a hoop, laundry basket, or marked area to practice shooting form and accuracy.

  • Distance practice: Shoot from different angles and distances to simulate in-game scenarios.

Improve your shooting skills by following some basic steps for accuracy and power behind your shot.

Passing Skills

  • Bounce pass: Aim for a fast, low bounce against a wall to practice accuracy.

  • Chest pass: Step into the pass, W hands behind the ball, elbows out, and extend arms forward.

  • Shoulder pass: One-handed, long-range passes to develop power and speed for fast breaks in netball social leagues.

Team Practice without a court

Practicing with your netball social league team or your back to netball group helps turn individual skills into effective game play.

These skills are a great way to explore different types of passing, build confidence, and brush up on how to execute each one with style and control - all while having fun on court!

Passing Drills

  • Triangle Passing Drill: Form a triangle and rotate through bounce, chest, and shoulder passes. Focus on accuracy, speed, and smooth transitions.

  • Two-Line Drill: Two lines face each other; practice chest and bounce passes while moving. Reinforces footwork and team coordination.

Below is a way to practice your passing skills at home with just two players and a ball.

Finding Space

  • Support positions: Move into space when teammates have the ball. Avoid crowding and create easy passing options.

  • Timing your run: Learn to run into passing lanes at the right moment. Essential for beginners netball and back to netball players to build confidence.

Avoiding Crowding

  • Spacing drills: Use cones or markers to visualize gaps on the court. Helps maintain flow and avoid defensive pressure.

  • Shadow games: Mini-games where players can only move into free space teach anticipation and awareness.`

The above is a great game to play in your teams without the need for a netball court, just a couple of marked zones and a netball.

Defending

  • Shadow defending: Move in front of a mirror or imagine an attacker’s movement. Work on pivots, footwork, and staying light on your feet.

  • Reaction drills: Have a family member call directions (left/right) to practice quick responses. Great for beginners netball training.

The above is a really simple way of working on staying with your player - you can do this anywhere with a partner, no ball or court needed but this will level up your defence skills!

Key Takeaways

  • Practicing at home improves footwork, passing, defending, and shooting, giving beginners and returning players a solid foundation.

  • Team drills reinforce spacing, timing, and decision-making — essential for social netball.

  • Small, consistent practice sessions make a huge difference in your confidence and performance - The spring/summer can bring some great opportunities to get together on a park/spare court before your games.
