This section is perfect for anyone starting out as a netball umpire, especially in social leagues and beginner competitions. It covers the fundamentals of umpiring, including hand signals, basic rule enforcement, and tips for managing your first matches with confidence. Whether you’re new to officiating or looking to brush up on your skills, this guide will help you understand umpire basics, make fair calls, and keep social netball games running smoothly. How to Communicate an Infringement
When a whistle is blown for a rule break, it’s important to communicate clearly so players understand what happened and what to do next. Here’s the step-by-step process:
Blow the whistle to stop play.
State the infringement clearly (for example: “contact” or “obstruction”).
Announce the penalty (for example: “free pass” or “penalty pass”).
Show where the penalty should be taken by pointing with your arm to the correct spot on the court.
This method keeps the game flowing smoothly and ensures everyone knows what’s happening. Clear communication also helps build respect and confidence from the players, especially in social or beginner leagues.
Umpires – Controlling Areas
When umpiring with a partner, each umpire is responsible for their own area of control.
Stick to your area unless your co-umpire asks for a second opinion, or you clearly saw an incident outside your zone.
Each umpire is responsible for:
The area to their right
The sideline closest to them
The goal line on their right
Following this ensures clarity on court and avoids confusion between umpires.
